Scalp Stimulation
The forgotten method to exponential hair growth
by Myesha Skye
Most of us naturals focus on length retention by saving our ends but a lot of us (including myself) ignore the scalp and our hair growth cycle. The scalp is the source of your hair growth. Having a healthy scalp is essential for what we all want, which is a healthy, thick, long, and shiny mane. If you, like many other naturals, have neglected the origin of your strands, we’ve got just the fix for you!
Scalp health is vital to growing a long and strong mane whether you're natural or relaxed. Maintaining a healthy scalp can prevent hair loss and promote faster hair growth. While protecting your ends always shows instant gratification, scalp upkeep can improve hair health for the long haul! While simple scalp care methods like not scratching your scalp or avoiding excessive heat are a great start, the methods of scalp care we're talking about today not only promote scalp health but hair growth as well.
Scalp Massages
Scalp massages can increase blood circulation to hair follicles, decrease stress, condition the scalp, and increases the strength of your hair roots. Whether you just use the pads of your fingers or enhance the experience with essential oils, scalp massages are a major key in keeping a healthy scalp. If you have a scalp condition such as eczema or psoriasis, I suggest mixing tea tree oil and carrier oil like almond or jojoba. Tea tree oil has a slew of benefits. It’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and unclogs hair follicles. It's a super oil! If you don't want to get down to the nitty gritty with your fingers, most retailers sell scalp massagers. My personal fave is the groove scalp massaging shampoo brush from Vanity Planet.
Scalp Exfoliation
I know scalp exfoliation sounds a bit... well... harsh, but essentially it’s necessary for some of us. I have dry skin and dry scalp comes right along with that. Scalp exfoliation has all the same benefits as exfoliating the other skin on your body. It can prevent hair loss, unclogs pores by removing build up, treat acne that occurs on the scalp, and relieves irritated and itchy scalps. Perfect for those of you that have scalp conditions. Scalp exfoliation treatments can be a bit pricey though. Some of my favorites include Carol’s Daughter’s Lisa’s Hair Elixir Fortifying Scalp Spray (perfect for when you have a protective style), Kiehl’s Deep Micro Exfoliating Scalp Treatment, and the Scalp Detox by Grow Gorgeous. Scalp treatments are hard to come by, but it’s easy to make your own. Mix equal parts Olive oil and brown sugar and apply it to your scalp. No olive oil? Use your favorite shampoo!
The Inversion Method
Although the inversion method hasn’t been scientifically proven, youtubers and hair bloggers alike agree that it’s helped their hair growth. Users of this technique claim that it grows hair an inch in 7 days. I didn’t have the same experience, but it did contribute significantly to my hair growth during Adrienne’s first 60 day hair growth challenge! Make sure you join the Hair Growth Challenge Facebook group and shop Precious Tresses hair care line! The inversion method consist of massaging your favorite oil into your scalp (mine is peppermint and almond!), inverting in anyway that’s comfortable for you for 4 minutes (I would lay upside down on my sofa. You can buy inversion tables but your girl is not a millionaire lol), leave oil on your scalp for at least two hours and afterwards cowash any excess oil out. Do this every day for seven consecutive days. I didn’t wash the oil out everyday. This approach is supposed to rush blood flow to the scalp therefore stimulating hair growth. You should try this approach once a month. At best your body will become accustomed to the extra blood flow. At worst overexposure to the inversion method could cause health issues like eye and ear pressure & muscle pulls.
Hope we were able to help you on your journey to long and precious tresses! Let us know in the Hair Growth Challenge group if you tried any of the aforementioned methods and share your own methods of scalp care. Remember to shop Precious Tresses hair care. Sending love and light!
